Notes for James V (Spouse 1)
JAMES V, KING OF SCOTLAND

BORN: 10 APRIL 1512
DIED: 16 DECEMBER 1542
Son of Margaret Tudor and James IV. Became King of Scotland at less than a year old. Married Marie de Guise and fathered Mary (who became Queen of Scotland at six days old). Died after the Battle of Solway Moss.
NOTES: He was 17 months old when his father (James IV) was killed. His mother acted as regent until her marriage in 1514 to Archibald, 6th earl of Angus. In 1525, during the continued struggle for control of the country, James was taken prisoner by his stepfather. Three years later the King escaped and assumed control of Scotland. His uncle, Henry VIII, King of England, tried to induce James to repudiate the authority of the Roman Catholic Church, but James refused, and relations between England and Scotland became strained; in 1542 war broke out.
