Notes for Joseph Callaway
He, wife Catherine, and a son died of fever within a short time of each other. The remaining family continued living on the home place for several years and about 1740 moved to that portion of Brunswick County, Virginia that became Bedford County, where they settled on Big Otter River at the eastern base of the Peaks of Otter. When the French and Indian War broke out in 1754, three of the Callaway sons were commissioned captains: Thomas at Hickey's fort, William at Pig River fort, and Richard at Blackwater fort.
