Notes for Nancy Ferguson
127Family tradition, per Kelly Robbins, descendant, Nancy was a Cherokee Indian. Her sister Elizabeth Ferguson married a Grimmet and also moved to Greene Co, Missouri at the same time as the Carters. Was she possibly married before she married Caleb?

======================

128Nancy Ferguson married Caleb Carter on 15 March 1826 in Monroe County, TN. She was the mother of 6 children: Rosetta Elizabeth, Andrew Jackson, Rolla, Margaret A., John, and Susannah. According to family tradition, she was a Cherokee Indian. Her sister, Elizabeth Ferguson, married a Grimmet and also moved to Greene County, MO, at the same time as the Carters (mid 1830s).

Elizabeth J. Dorrell Carter

Birth:
Jul. 7, 1833

Death:

Elizabeth J. Dorrell was the daughter of Stephen and Sarah (Mullinex) Dorrell, pioneers who came from Indiana to Greene County, Missouri, in the mid-1830s. She married Rolla Carter on July 17, 1851, and became the mother of 13 children: Stephen, Caleb III, Nancy, Fidiller, Henry, Rosetta, Elizabeth, Oliver Richard, Ida, Cora, Fannie, and two more who died young (names are unknown). Her maiden name is sometimes seen spelled as "Darrell."

Notes for Caleb (Spouse 1)
89According to the HISTORY OF GREENE COUNTY, Caleb came to Missouri in 1833. Caleb was a blacksmith by trade.  However, as one studies his life here in Missouri, you will find that Caleb bought and sold much land between the years 1838  to 1848. According to the HISTORY OF GREENE COUNTY, Caleb's father was a solider in the wars of 1812.  Caleb had at least seven to nine Children.  Checking the 1830 Tennessee census and the 1850 Missouri census. He was married to a full Indian Maiden NANCY FARGSON (FERGUSON, FURGSON), she was born 1795, in Virginia and Died June 20, 1875....and buried in the same cemetery Prospect Cemetery....

Carter is an English Occupational name for the transporter of goods by cart or wagon from Anglo-Norman French caretier, a derivative of Old French caret which originally implied 'carrier.' Occasionally it is a form of McArthur.  First found in Winchester where they were recorded as a family of great antiquity seated with manor and estates.  Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Ambrose Carter who settled in Virginia in 1663 and others.

126Note: Several posters on RootsWeb list our Caleb as being the son of Thomas Carter (born 1763 in VA, died July 25, 1822, in Roane County, TN) and his wife Elizabeth (born August 4, 1762 in VA, married August 9, 1784 in King & Queen County, VA).  Since I discovered this information only recently on 11/14/06, I have not had a chance to verify or contact the RootsWeb posters to see why they believe it is so.  On initial reading of the extracts from Thomas Carter’s Revolutionary War pension documents, I am not so sure that the dates and ages match to our Caleb.  Thomas does indicate he has a son Calip (Caleb); however, the file includes a statement from a former neighbor that at the time the Carters left Richmond for western Virginia in January 1789, they had a son Polly and son Calip (Caleb). Another former neighbor states that in 1797 Calip (Caleb) was about 12 years of age (meaning he would have been born around 1785).  But our Caleb is listed as being born in about 1796 (calculation from census records).  Something doesn’t add up.

Caleb Carter

Birth:
1796
Virginia, USA
Death:
Nov. 22, 1861
Bois D'Arc
Greene County
Missouri, USA

Caleb Carter was born in Virginia. His first wife's name is unknown, but their daughter Joanna was born in Virginia about 1816. It seems likely that the first wife passed away, and by 15 March 1826 Caleb was in Roane County, TN, where he married Nancy Ferguson (according to family tradition, she was all or part Cherokee). He appears in the 1830 census in Regiment 67, Monroe County, TN, listed as Caleb Carter Junior (there are two other Caleb Carters in that county that year, but no guarantee either was his father - he may have just been designated as Junior because he was the younger of the two in his neighborhood). The couple had six children: Rosetta Elizabeth (Kimmons), Andrew Jackson, Rolla, Margaret Almeda (Brown), John, and Susannah (Tyler). In the late 1830s the entire family, including Caleb's oldest daughter Joanna, moved to Greene County, MO, where they settled in Center Township. Caleb was a farmer and blacksmith. On 28 August 1861, he made his will, only two weeks after the Battle of Wilson's Creek just a few miles away. Southwestern Missouri was a bitterly divided region, and that fall saw several neighbors killed by unknown attackers. Caleb passed away on 22 November 1861. Less than two months later, in February 1862, two of his sons would be killed in the war, and in August 1863 one of his sons-in-law was also killed. The rest of the family survived the Civil War, including son Rolla, who served in the 74th Enrolled MO Militia (Union). Caleb and Nancy have many descendants, some still living in Greene County and others scattered across the country.

It is my goal to someday determine who Caleb and Nancy's parents were (based on the information in the Revolutionary War Pension application of the Virginian Thomas Carter, husband of Elizabeth Chattin, I am not convinced his son Caleb matches with our Caleb). If you have any clues, if you have a photo of Caleb or Nancy, or if you know where Joanna Carter is buried, please let me know.
