Notes for John Carr , Sr.
John Carr, Sr. (Heinrich Henry "Roebuck" (Gehr)4, Hans Jacob3 Karr, Hans Jacob2, Hans Nicolas1) was born 1765 in Petersburg Hardy Co. West Va., and died 1842 in Randolph Co. West Va.. He married Abigail Vetch Abt. 1788. She was born 1760, and died 1844.
Notes for John Carr, Sr.:
John Carr, Sr. built his home on the western side of the Dry Fork River. Here he built a large grain mill which remained in operation for over 100 years.
The Carr's of Randolph and Tucker counties are descendants of John Carr, Sr. from Petersburg in Hardy county (now Grant county), John served in the Revolutionary War in John Harness' Rangers, with his brother, Conrad. Like his father, rented a section of Fairfax land. He must have grown tired of renting and yearned to have a place of his own. He found that place on the Dry Fork River. John Carr seemed to have been living on Dry Fork by 1805. The land he settled was just below the mouth of Red Creek where Steve Cooper now lives (1991). Here, by about 1815, he built a grist mill, of which the millrace and the foundation can still be seen.
It appears that John Carr, Sr. moved back and forth between Petersburg and Dry Fork, or kept two homes. On the 1810 and tha1820 census, he has the same enumeration in both Randolph and Hardy counties. About 1788 John married Abigail.

Will of John Carr (dated 19 Mar 1861)
In the name of God; Amen, I John Carr being of sound mind and body and disposing memory, do make this to be my last will and testament as follows (that is to say) I desire that my body be decently buried, at the discretion of my executors hereafter named and I direct that all my just debts be paid out of my estate as soon after my decease as may be convenient.
First I give and bequeath unto my son Joab Carr the sum of what he says will compensate him for his trouble for taking care of me and my wife, Abigale, after my son Joab Carr is paid out of my estate, I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Abigail and my four children viz. Thos Carr, Jacob Carr, Seymour Carr[,]Benjamin Y. Carr all my estate; and I do hereby nominate and appoint Solomon Bonner to be my executor of this my will and testament, and I do revoke and make void all former wills made by me and do hereby declare these presents to be and contain my last will and testament. In witness whereof, I the said testator John Carr have to this my said will written upon one sheat of paper set my hand and seal this 19th day of March in the year 1861.

According to Miriam Carr Cooper in "Randolph County History and Families," John car built his home on the western side of the Dry Fork River. Abigail's surname is sometimes reported as "Veach," but the researcher who proposed this (Jeff Carr) has recanted. Her correct surname is not known.
