From: ALASKA RAILROAD RECORD, April 19, 1918

GIFT SWORD WILL BE PRESENTED
FORMER ROADMASTER C. G. JONES
A handsomely engraved service sword, the gift of Anchorage friends and former associates, will be presented to Captain C. G. Jones, who resigned his position as roadmaster of Anchorage Division recently to accept a commission in the Thirty-first Engineering regiment, now recruiting at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The presentation will be made through Col. Frederick Mears, commander of the regiment, who until last January was a member of the Alaskan Engineering Commission.
The scabbard of the sword will bear this legend: "To Captain Christopher George Jones, Thirty-first Engineers, U. S. A., from friends and employees of the Alaskan Engineering Commission."
When the saber is presented to Captain Jones, the following letter, signed by the donors, will be delivered to him:
Anchorage, Alaska, April 1, 1918. Dear Captain:
When your appointment as captain in Colonel Mears' regiment was announced, almost immediately followed by your departure for your new station to serve your country and your flag, a feeling of deep regret was felt by your many friends in the employ of the Alaskan Engineering Commission, whom you left behind. This feeling, however, was assuaged by the fact that you were leaving for a field of broader responsibilities and greater usefulness— one in which your abilities as a man and an executive would be given to the service of your country, at this time when it needs the best of its manhood.
The undersigned, some of whom have been associated with you for years, and others who have been employed under your direction since the commencement of construction of the Government railroad in Alaska, as a remembrance of the friendship and esteem in which you are held by this community; as a token of your splendid managerial capacity; and above all, as an appreciation of your qualities as a man, take pleasure in presenting you with this sword.
As an army officer you have never as yet been tried, but we, your friends, have an implicit and abiding faith that you will acquit yourself with that credit and honor which are so closely associated with all the noble traditions of our Army.
As you well know, the best wishes and friendly feelings of this community will always be with you, whether at home or in a foreign land, in camp or on the battlefield; and with these sentiments goes the conviction that you will ever cherish this sword as an insignia of the full significance which it represents, that its wearer is an officer and a gentleman.
